A Byzantine gold jewellery element with detailed openwork, granulation at the edges, and a gold ball in the centre. With a modern 18 carat gold pin and loop suspension from a modern gold chain.
Byzantine openwork jewellery is decorated with elaborate patterns in gold filigree, granulation, and wire on sheets of gold. Similar workmanship can be found on 'basket' earrings and on the chain terminals for necklaces: I. Kalavrezou, Byzantine Women and their World, New Haven and London, 2003, no. 137; 147.
